Making
The MIT Morningside Academy for Design offers resources for makers across the MIT community. Metropolis and The Deep makerspaces, as well as the N52 Fabrication Shop, welcome undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and researchers, to explore, experiment, and innovate through hands-on making.
N52 Fabrication Shop
The N52 fabrication shop is home to a number of undergraduate classes focusing on design across multiple majors, the DesignPlus Learning Community, and the greater MIT community. Our shop has a wide variety of equipment to accommodate projects across disciplines, types of materials, and working both traditionally and digitally. It features:
- Basic hand tools
- Soldering stations
- FDM 3D printing
- SLS 3D printing
- SLA 3D printing
- Bandsaws
- Sanders
- Laser cutters
- Milling machines
- Vinyl cutting
- Sewing machines
- Embroidery machines
Who can use the N52 Shops?
The N52 MAD fabrication shop is open to the MIT community (students, faculty, and staff) after completing a general orientation.
Where are you located?
We are located on the 3rd floor of Building N52.
What are your hours?
Our operating hours can be found on this calendar. Students taking classes in the MIT MAD space and members of the DesignPlus First-Year Learning Community have 24/7 access.
How do I get access?
Sign up for a general orientation. Specific machines require additional training.
Do you provide materials?
We have some scrap materials, but users should generally plan to bring their own materials.

N52 Orientation Workshop
Metropolis
Metropolis (6C-006B), operated by MIT Project Manus, is open to all members of the MIT community (students, staff, and faculty). It offers MakerLodge, a training for first-year MIT students, student-mentor based training, and a strong maker community. It features:
- Welding
- Laser Cutting
- FDM 3D Printing
- Basic Electronics
- Sewing
- Woodworking Tools
- Small Screen Printing

The Deep
The Deep (37-072), operated by MIT Project Manus, is open to all members of the MIT community (students, staff, and faculty). It offers student-mentor based training and a strong maker community. It features:
- Milling
- Turning
- SLA 3D Printers
- Mold Making
- WaterJet

Through make.mit.edu, Project Manus makes it easier for community members to find spaces and machines, and access training in 35+ makerspaces on the MIT campus.
The MIT Makersystem includes makerspaces tailored for general making, entrepreneurship, research, the arts, class projects, metal working, wood working, glass working, micro/nano making, biomaking, and more. These makerspaces provide access to a host of tools: from chisels, saws, and belt sanders to 3D printers, welding machines, and oscilloscopes and much more.
