Collaborative Design in Immersive Virtual Environments

Communicating embodied experiences in virtual design environments

Virtual reality has tremendous potential, but how can it be used to engage experts in specific contexts such as collaborative spatial design?

In this project we explore the potentials immersive virtual environments in the context of collaborative spatial design. We designed and implemented a prototype using Oculus Rift that allows users to design a layout collaboratively with hand-tracking that makes it possible to employ natural hand gestures as the user interacts with the interfaces. The applications are virtually limitless, but in particular we focused on collaboration between the user and an expert who can help solve spatial design tasks and make decisions through a shared virtual environment. For instance, a user could interact with an architect or interior designer who helps make decisions about furniture and where it might be placed in a particular room.
